Dear Clients and Partners,

We would like to share several key updates from the Intellectual Property Office in Qatar that may impact your current and future IP matters in the country:

🔹 Electronic Publications and Certificates
As part of Qatar’s ongoing digital transformation efforts, trademark gazettes are now being published electronically. Additionally, trademark registration certificates will now be issued in digital format only.

🔹 Expanded Trademark Examination Scope
Trademark applications will now be examined across all classes, rather than being restricted to the class in which the application was filed. This marks a significant shift towards a more comprehensive review process.

🔹 Upcoming Cooperation with KIPO
Beginning September 2025, the Qatari IP Office will officially begin cooperating with the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO). This partnership aims to strengthen international collaboration and streamline administrative procedures.

🔹 New POA Requirements for Responses and Oppositions
A legalized Power of Attorney (POA) is now mandatory when:

  • Responding to decisions issued by the Trademark Office
  • Filing oppositions against published International Registrations (IRs)

The POA must be:

  1. Legalized before the Qatar Embassy in the applicant’s home country
  2. Further legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Qatar

We encourage all clients to consider these changes when planning their trademark filings or oppositions in Qatar.
