One more GCC country accedes to the Madrid System. Right before Expo 2020 was officially launched, the United Arab Emirates deposited its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol with WIPO Deputy Director Generals Binying Wang and Hasan Kleib, making it the 109th member of the Madrid System. There are now three countries from the GCC party to Madrid.

The accession will take effect on 28-December-21 to help local brand owners with protecting their trademarks in 108 countries internationally.

The implication of the accession to examination procedures, publication procedures and requirements for a POA for national applications is not clear yet. We will keep you apprised of all further information we receive.
